A first attempt at making a video! Rather rough around the edges! These are old photographs of Valletta, Malta taken in the early part of the 20th Century. The music is "Anthem Study", variations on the Maltese National Anthem, composed by Gordon Mizzi from the CD "Song of the Sea". Carlos Bonnell on guitar

'Witness to War' is the title of an exhibition that brings together a selection of Stan Fraser's photo and film documentation of Malta during World War II. Gunner Fraser was stationed in Malta between 1941 and 1943. During this time, the hobby filmographer and photographer captured not only the life of a soldier in the artillery but also life from the civilian perspective in Malta and Gozo. The video shows the unusual location of an exhibition, a few metres below ground level, in the cellar at the Auberge d'Italie, in the heart of Valletta. The same cellar served as an air raid shelter for the residents of the city - several elderly visitors to the exhibition recalled spending hours under ground during the many air raids over Valletta and the Grand Harbour between 1941 and 1943. VALLETTA, MALTA'S CAPITAL Valletta shares its early history with the island of Malta. The foundation stone of Valletta was laid by the Grand Master of the Order of Saint John, Jean Parisot de la Valette on 28 March 1566. La Valette placed the first stone in Our Lady of Victories Church. The Order decided to found a new city on the Xiberras peninsula just after the end of the Siege of Malta in 1565, so as to fortify the Order's position in Malta and bind the Knights to the island. Many of the most important buildings were built by the Maltese architect Gerolamo Cassar. Valletta is an urban area which boasts many buildings from the 16th century and onwards, many built during the rule of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem (the Knights Hospitaller). The Valletta peninsula has...
